CITY OF REDWOOD CITY
*************************
The Express Lanes from the San Mateo County/Santa Clara County line to Whipple Avenue in Redwood City will open soon. Testing of tolling equipment is currently taking place in preparation for the Express Lanes to open, which are designed to move more people through the corridor while prioritizing carpools.
Travelers in this section of U.S. 101 may notice the change in lane striping and pavement markings in the existing high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes. The existing stripe is being replaced with a skip stripe and the existing diamond shape is being replaced with the letters “EXPRS LANE.”
“Under Construction” banners on the new overhead variable toll message signs are being replaced with “Toll Testing” banners. See Exhibit 2 for an example.
During toll equipment testing, the lanes will continue to operate as HOV lanes, allowing the lanes to be used by vehicles with two or more people, from Monday to Friday, between the hours of 5 AM – 9 AM and 3 PM – 7 PM. This includes all carpools and Employer Shuttle Providers. The lanes are open to all vehicles during all other times. There will be no charge for the use of the lanes UNTIL the Express Lanes are open, which will be signified by the removal of the “TOLL TESTING” banners. Follow the signs! Signage on the road is the best place to find out which vehicles can use the lanes and when.
Once the Express Lanes open, they will be free for vehicles with 3 or more people, half price for vehicles with two people and some clean air vehicles, and available for a toll to vehicles with one person. The Express Lanes in this section of U.S. 101 will connect to the Express Lanes being constructed in Santa Clara County.
