A 27-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed someone last week in San Carlos, according to San Mateo County officials

Samuel Craig Kankel, a Belmont man, appeared in court Tuesday on two felony counts, including attempted murder with a knife and assault with a deadly weapon, said San Mateo County District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe.

He is accused of stabbing a 32-year-old man around 1:15 a.m. Thursday in the 700 block of Elm Street in San Carlos, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office. The injured man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and on Friday was listed in stable condition, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.

Kankel was arrested about 11 p.m. at a home in the 1600 block of Sunnyslope Avenue in Belmont and was booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility on suspicion of attempted murder, authorities said.

Kankel is in custody on a $160,000 bail, Wagstaffe said. Kankel declined a court-appointed attorney and requested his own, the district attorney said. His case was continued until April 19.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Detective H. Cheung at (650) 363-4347 or email hcheung@smcgov.org.
