The first new sidewalks and newly installed street lights are now open to the public as a part of a significant reconstruction of Middlefield Road through North Fair Oaks.

The County of San Mateo's Department of Public Works is leading the $25 million project, which will look to reconfigure Middlefield, between Pacific and Fifth avenues, from four lanes to three—with one travel lane in each direction and a center left turn lane.

Other planned work for the project includes new bikes lanes, wider sidewalks, utility undergrounding, parallel parking, street features (such as benches, trees, street art, and more), as well as the integration of "smart" technology into such features as connected street lights, digital signage, traffic monitoring, and pedestrian analytics.

During this reconstruction, businesses will remain open during work hours. Pedestrian areas will be visibly marked and separated by barriers from active construction to keep shoppers and workers safe for the project's duration.

The County of San Mateo says that the majority of the work for the project is anticipated to be completed by December 2022.
