Kaiser Permanente has appointed Sheila Gilson as Senior Vice President and Area Manager for the San Mateo Service Area, granting her oversight of hospital operations and the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan for the region, according to an announcement by the hospital system. 

The area encompasses the South San Francisco and Redwood City medical centers, catering to over 257,000 members.

Since February 2017, Gilson has been leading Kaiser Permanente's Redwood City Medical Center. Her new role also includes managing 1,200 employees and staff, collaborating with more than 400 physicians at Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco. Gilson aims to enhance primary and specialty care access in both Redwood City and South San Francisco, focusing on the Advanced Neuroscience Center at Kaiser Permanente Redwood City.

Gilson's career began as a bedside nurse at Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco, and she has since held various leadership positions within the organization. Committed to community involvement, Gilson has served on the Skyline Community College Board and the Hospital Consortium of San Mateo County and is currently a member of the San Mateo CEO section of the Hospital Council Northern & Central California. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from California State University Dominquez Hills and a Master of Science in Management from Notre Dame De Namur University.
