Good morning, Redwood City!
We are in the middle of "United Against Hate Week," as proclaimed by Redwood City. This week is, according to the city, "a call for local civic action to stop the hate and implicit biases that are a dangerous threat to the safety and civility of our neighborhoods, towns and cities."
What began in 2017 as a Bay Area-wide United Against Hate poster campaign created in response to white supremacist rallies has now grown into a full week of action and events. As the week comes to a close, two final events are upcoming tomorrow: the Sequoia High School Dream Club virtual dinner and annual fundraiser and the Transgender Day of Remembrance.
Twenty-two years ago, the first Transgender Day of Remembrance was held as a candlelight vigil to honor the lives lost to anti-trans violence. Tomorrow, for San Mateo County's seventh hosting of the event, organizers invite all residents to attend the ceremony—and learn how they can make the community a safer place for all.
“The purpose of this event is to memorialize transgender individuals murdered for being who they are,” said Tanya Beat, director of the county’s LGBTQ Commission and lead organizer for the event. “And to provide the community the opportunity to mourn and recognize the individuals, their lives and what they’ve lived for.”
To learn more about United Against Hate Week, and hear perspectives from city officials, event organizers and local residents, check out the video here. And keep an eye out for the transgender pride flag which is set to fly over Courthouse Square tomorrow.
That's all for now. But, as always, feel free to get in touch!
Signing off,
Leah
