Update on civilian oversight
For the last few months, a group of grassroots, community organizers under the name Fixin’ SMC has been pushing hard to give the community a voice in regional law enforcement. Following in the footsteps of more than 150 jurisdictions nationwide, Fixin’ is working to establish a civilian oversight board and county inspector general to supervise and check the power of the county sheriff.
Last month, the Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to establish a committee exploring civilian oversight, the first concrete action taken by the county towards making this a reality. Tonight, Fixin’ is hosting a special guest for its monthly meeting: Congresswoman Jackie Speier.
