Good morning, Redwood City!
I think I've seen the sunshine once or twice in 2023. There is a 100% chance of rain today, and a wind advisory is in effect. It's rough out there, and from what we've heard, Redwood City was unprepared for storms of this magnitude.
(By the way, don't forget to complete our survey and share how you've managed the storm.)
Big Budget Cuts
In other news, California is headed toward a $22.5 billion budget deficit, and Gov. Gavin Newsom is proposing billions in cuts. Locally, State Sen. Josh Becker and recently elected Assembly member Diane Papan have weighed in on the budget proposal.
Papan: "As with our weather, California is experiencing significant volatility. But due to careful planning and thoughtful budgeting, the state is well positioned to withstand a decrease in revenues and the economic uncertainty ahead."
Becker: "The proposed cuts and delays are concerning at a time when we should be accelerating our work, not tapping the brake pedal."
Fixin' the Jail?
After two people who had been in the custody of correctional officers at Maguire Correctional Facility died, Fixin' San Mateo County is calling for an independent investigation. An investigation by the District Attorney's Office just won't suffice, said Jim Lawrence, Fixin' San Mateo County chairperson. The organization plans to send a letter to the state attorney general.
That's all for now. But more to come.
