A Redwood City attorney has thrown his hat into the ring for a chance to succeed Rep. Jackie Speier, who announced her retirement late last year from the 14th Congressional District.

Andrew Watters, 41, on Wednesday announced his candidacy to represent California’s 15th Congressional district, formerly the 14th Congressional district, by releasing a video on YouTube advocating “radical honesty in Congress.” Watters describes himself as “not a career politician or political insider” but a “regular citizen that wants to make Washington work for Californians,” according to his website.

“I pledge to always talk straight to my constituents and to focus on what really matters to them and their families–not the loudest voices of the political fringes or the special interests that have hijacked our political system,” Watters said in a statement.

Watters, who is recently married and grew up in San Mateo, has a law degree from U.C. Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco and a bachelor’s degree from UCLA.

Speier, D-San Francisco/San Mateo announced she would not seek reelection in November, fueling speculation about her Democratic successors, according to a report by the Palo Alto Weekly. In December, State Assembly member Kevin Mullin, D-South San Francisco, who is running to succeed Speierreceived her endorsement. San Mateo County Supervisor David Canepa and Burlingame City Council member Emily Beach are also running for the seat.

The primary election is on June 7.
