Good morning, Redwood City!
Has a meteor crashed into the SMC History Museum or is it just the latest Art Kiosk exhibit??
Don’t panic—it is in fact the latest installation by Fernando Escartiz, a local artist originally from Mexico. “We are Stardust" is now on display in Courthouse Square.
As Escartiz said of his new work: “Just as we need to know darkness to understand and appreciate the light, sometimes the living species on this planet, and even the planet itself, have to go through a strong impact in order to be reborn.”
On a different note, you may have read that a major strike was avoided yesterday when Kaiser Permanente reached a deal with the union representing thousands of pharmacists. That’s true—but it’s not over yet.
Thousands of Kaiser employees throughout Northern California, including at Redwood City Kaiser, will be walking out on Thursday morning to show solidarity with their fellow engineers in a planned 24-hour sympathy strike. More on that to come.
Finally, if you haven’t heard enough of redistricting yet…now’s the time to tune in!
Tomorrow Wednesday, Nov. 17, all Redwood City residents are invited to attend a Public Hearing hosted by the Advisory Redistricting Committee to give feedback on five new district maps (see here). Which do you think best represents Redwood City? This is the final public comment before a recommendation is made to the city council. Share your thoughts at tomorrow’s 6 p.m. meeting (agenda and Zoom info here).
Finally, our very own Representative Jackie Speier just announced that she will not be seeking re-election. Speier started her career as the youngest member of San Mateo County's Board of Supervisors back in the '80s and has, in her words, served the county "at almost every level of government for nearly four decades."
Questions? Comments? Ideas? Send ‘em our way!
Signing off,
Leah
