Good morning Redwood City!
It's a lovely day outside and I'm excited. About what you ask? The five draft maps that the redistricting committee will look at and consider tonight for submission to City Council. One of these five maps could be the NEXT district map and that, my friends, is exciting. History in the making.
The advisory redistricting meeting is this evening at 6 p.m. You can find all the details, including the zoom info, here.
You might have seen that U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo) is not going to be running for reelection. Congratulations to Speier on her retirement after more than a decade in Congress.
We've been following a story from our sister publication PaloAltoOnline.com about Pets in Need, the nonprofit that is being accused of providing inhumane transportation to multiple dogs, including seven puppies who died likely due to heatstroke. Well, that case took another turn this week. The nonprofit is now cutting ties with the city of Palo Alto alleging a breach of contract. We'll continue to follow that.
Yesterday, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors created a firearm gun buyback pilot program. The sheriff's office will head the program and will host five events to encourage individuals to turn in unwanted guns. More information can be found here.
I hope you have a fantastic day. Keep it here, because we have more stories coming at you today.
Signing off,
Michelle
PS: We had a glitch with our Photo of the Day yesterday, so here it is again in all its hubcap glory! (Don't forget to send yours!)
