Good morning, Redwood City!
The County of San Mateo is taking big steps towards their goal of effectively ending homelessness.
On Wednesday, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that the county will receive $68 million in state funds to meet the needs of hundreds of unhoused residents.
These funds will support two major projects, including the county’s first Navigation Center, a forthcoming 240-unit building near Highway 101 in Redwood City. The center, which will offer housing, case managers and other services for residents at risk of homelessness, is set to open in 2022.
“We want to be the first county in the Bay Area to say that we've achieved ‘functional zero,’” said County Manager Michael Callagy, adding that a shelter will be available for anyone who wants one. “And we hope to achieve that within the year or so.”
This Navigation Center was made possible in large part thanks to a historic land swap agreement finalized this fall between Redwood City and the county. The federal grant will also go towards developing a hotel into a temporary shelter. More on that here.
Finally, thank you to all who came out for our “Meet the Editors” event yesterday. It was wonderful to connect with you all, even virtually, and to see how much passion you have for your city. If you couldn’t make it, or you still have questions, don’t hesitate to reach out us anytime.
Enjoy your weekend, and see you Monday.
Signing off,
Leah
