Good morning, Redwood City!

Grab your mittens and mugs of hot cocoa because winter has officially arrived.

December 21, also known as the winter solstice, is the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, which means Redwood City will only see 9.5 hours of sunlight today—that's more than five hours less sun than on the longest day, June 21.

According to weather reports, the new season brings light to moderate rainfall that will continue through the holiday weekend. It may not be a white Christmas, but it will be a wet, windy one! More on that here.

There's a story I've been working on for a while that I'm eager to finally share…

Recently, real estate developer Thomas James Homes has been buying up properties around the Peninsula—perhaps you've even seen their signs in your own neighborhood. In unincorporated North Fair Oaks, after several new homes went up, and several very old trees came down, the residents decided to organize in protest. Over the past year, they've collected signatures, put up signs and even gotten the attention of county officials.

"It's actually pretty alarming," said one resident, who's lived in the neighborhood for 12 years. "The amount of development that's happening so quickly in a concentrated area."

What began as a tip about a dispute between some of the residents of North Fair Oaks and a housing developer has grown into a two-part (so far) series about the proliferation of new, more expensive homes in previously affordable areas—and the changes that spells for the tree canopies, the local neighborhoods and the county at large.

Check out part 1 here, and stay tuned for part 2 tomorrow.

That's all for now. Stay dry, and happy Tuesday!

Signing off,

Leah
