Good Morning, Redwood City!
What do you know about Handley Rock? Do you know who it was named after? Well, you're about to find out, as our history blogger takes you to the past.
Yesterday, we dropped a story that was weeks in the making. We collaborated across newsrooms with the Palo Alto Weekly about a dangerous and growing problem affecting cities throughout the Bay Area: ghost guns.
Reporters Leah Worthington and Sue Dremann spoke with law enforcement officials in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties about the significant rise in ghost guns—weapons without a serial number that have been hand-built, often from kits. These firearms have been used in many recent crimes throughout the area.
We plan to do more stories like this—deep reporting on wide-reaching issues—and look forward to hearing your thoughts. We hope you had the opportunity to read it, but if you didn't, you could do so here.
You probably remember waking up to a tsunami warning a couple of weeks ago, and learning about the underwater volcanic eruption that caused it. While the Bay Area was only hit by some larger-than-normal waves, Tonga, a Polynesian island nation suffered severe damage.
Many families in San Mateo County, which is home to one of the largest Tongan populations in the state, are only just making contact with their relatives back home. We spoke with one woman, Fusi Taaga, who's also the owner of Tokemoana's in Redwood City, the only place to get Tongan food on the Peninsula. Read about Taaga, and how you can donate to those affected by the disaster, here.
Finally, we are hiring! Our parent company, Embarcadero Media, is looking for a new Marketing & Community Engagement Assistant to join our growing marketing team. If you are interested in community outreach, event planning, and social media marketing we would love to hear from you! Read more about the position and apply here: https://bit.ly/33ctmpI.
Signing off,
Michelle & Leah
