Good morning, Redwood City!

Early this morning I joined dozens of volunteers from Redwood City (and hundreds countywide) who gathered in near-freezing temperatures for the 2022 One Day Homeless Count.

The biannual event, which is mandated by the federal government, gives a single day snapshot of the local and regional homeless populations. For several hours, volunteers drive up and down the streets of San Mateo County, noting the location and approximate number of homeless people living in tents, encampments, vehicles and other makeshift shelters.

County Manager Mike Callagy, who volunteered in Redwood City, described the count as a vital practice that allows officials to better understand the scope of the homeless problem and to allocate resources to those in need. Because this is the first count since before the pandemic, Callagy and others are eager to see the results. Full story on that to come shortly—stay tuned.

Don't forget to check out this week's story from the crime files. In today's addition, blogger Douglas MacGowan writes about the 20th century grave robbers of San Mateo County.

Happy Thursday!

Signing off,
Leah
