Good morning, Redwood City!

Big fire erupts

If you glimpsed a big plume of smoke wafting over the city yesterday, you weren't the only one.

A mid-afternoon fire erupted at Sims Metal recycling plant on Seaport Boulevard, right near the Port of Redwood City. At least one person was injured and multiple vehicles caught fire in the blaze, which was extinguished within half an hour by fire personnel. You can see footage of the fire, captured by resident Carson Predovich, on our TikTok page.

As many residents have noted, the fire was not the first for Sims Metal, which suffered a two-alarm fire in 2013 that burned for 8 hours before being contained. We'll be looking into this some more; let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Two year anniversary

As unbelievable as it seems, tomorrow marks two years since the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. In honor of the frontline workers—including grocery workers, nurses, restaurant staff and other public workers—several Redwood City buildings will light up blue. The lights will turn on early in the day but will be most visible beginning at dusk.

Keep an eye out for that blue glow, and don't forget to thank a frontline worker tomorrow!

From the crime files

In the mood for more crime? Don't miss the latest from Douglas MacGowan: this week, the story of a police officer who became a murderer.

Happy Tuesday!

Signing off,

Leah
