Good morning, Redwood City!

From the council chambers

Last night's city council meeting was jam-packed. Among the items approved by the council are a new contract for the Service Employees International Union Local 521 and a letter to the County Board of Supervisors requesting a buffer zone around the local Planned Parenthood.

There was also some really interesting discussion of amendments to the City Charter that would open up boards, committees and commissions to non-residents and non-electors. More on that soon.

A historic graduation

A pandemic couldn't stop Monet Pierson who recently made history as the first woman to complete her high school diploma while incarcerated at the county jail. With her next court date in June, Pierson hopes to be released soon so she can return to her kids and take on the next goal—college. "I'm ready to reach my full potential," she said during her graduation ceremony.

Summit strikes?

Teachers throughout the Summit Public Schools are holding walk-ins in anticipation of possible strikes. After two years of negotiations, teachers are hoping that this morning's factfinding hearing will lead to a final contract. If not, they're looking at a strike in the next two weeks.

That's all for now…happy Tuesday!
