Good morning, Redwood City!

In with the new, out with the old

I've been thinking a lot about all the development that's happening in downtown Redwood City—what's being torn down and what will go in it's place. Supervisor Warren Slocum tweeted about this phenomenon last month: "Many places youth and families previously hung out in Redwood City are now gone due to the crush of development. The bowling alley, roller rink, batting cages, Miniature Golf and Grand Prix have disappeared."

Of course, it's more complicated than that. The city has housing requirements to meet, and there's still an eagerness for new retail and dining. But, as someone who grew up skating at that rink, it is hard to say goodbye.

Have any of your favorite places disappeared in the last few years? What do you think of the new development? I'd love to hear from you.

Rallying cry

It was hot outside the Sequoia Hospital yesterday where a crowd gathered to stand in solidarity with the nearly 300 hospital workers striking to demand better pay, healthcare and working conditions. I spoke with nursing assistants, respiratory therapists and lab assistants who described working long hours without a break and living paycheck-to-paycheck on minimum wages.

"We are not asking for a luxury raise, we just have to get fair payment," one worker said. "We deserve better." Read the full story here.

Editor's note: In yesterday's newsletter, the Pulse misstated that nurses are on strike. Nurses' assistants are on strike.

Have a good Tuesday,

Leah
