Good morning, Redwood City!

Welcome, Elmer

Last night, the Redwood City Council voted unanimously to appoint Elmer Martínez Saballos as the new district 4 representative. Martínez Saballos, who will fill the seat vacated by Michael Smith last month, is a Redwood City planning commissioner and lifelong city resident.

He’ll be sworn into office on September 12. Much more on that to come, so stay tuned.

New school, no problem?

As thousands of local students returned to the classroom last week, a handful of rising middle schoolers had to make an even bigger transition.

At Redwood City’s Roosevelt School, a major teacher shortage came to a head last spring when two-thirds of the sixth grade teachers resigned, prompting the superintendent to shutter the entire grade. As a result, more than 70 students were forced to make a last-minute decision to enroll at one of the district’s other schools.

Read the full story of how the decision came about, and how students are faring, below.

Happy Tuesday!

Leah
