Happy Friday, Redwood City!

It's a weekend for social justice in our city. Here's a rundown of events.

Jail Mail

A San Jose-based advocacy group, Silicon Valley De-Bug, is gathering in front of the County Jail in Redwood City at 4:30 p.m. to bring awareness to the sheriff's policy on ending physical mail and switching to digital mail for incarcerated people. Silicon Valley De-Bug focuses on campaigns related to bail reform, jail reform, police accountability, housing rights and much more. According to the group, it has attempted to contact the sheriff to reverse his decision, but its attempts have been in vain. More on that later.

Roe for Change

A 16-year-old high school student, Lauren Lin, is the lead organizer behind an abortion rights rally and march this Saturday in front of the Redwood City Library. The rally begins at noon and will immediately be followed by a march through downtown. The march starts at 1:30 p.m. Raging Grannies is also helping to organize the event, which comes two days before the California deadline to register to vote either online or in person.

And this last event is not really social justice related, but I should mention it. On Monday, the city council will consider an ordinance prohibiting

retail establishments from selling firearms or ammunition for up to 45 days. The moratorium could be extended for up to two years. The city needs a 5/7 vote for the ordinance to pass. The city will also decide whether to study and analyze regulations on these types of establishments.

And finally, I'm in Argentina all next week and won't be back in the country until November. See you all then!
