Good afternoon, Redwood City!

A resounding no to guns, yes to transit

Last night’s city council meeting was a big one. Nearly three years since the project was first proposed, the council gave the go-ahead for the creation of the city’s new “Transit District.” The transit-oriented district will completely rebuild the train station, renovate Sequoia Station and create millions of square feet of new office, retail and residential space, among other things.

The council also voted unanimously to extend the urgency moratorium, essentially banning gun shops in Redwood City, for another 10 months. This comes after a firearms retailer, Dumpling Defense, submitted an application for a business license at Roosevelt Plaza, within walking distance of Roosevelt Elementary and Kennedy Middle schools.

Though many members of the public expressed concerns about the proximity of guns to neighborhood schools, gun rights advocates, who have threatened to take legal action against the city, said that wasn’t the issue.

“It’s not the position of the organization that the city lacks the ability to zone certain parts as improper for firearm retailers,” said Adam Kraut, executive director of the Second Amendment Foundation. “But a flat ban on anywhere within the city is problematic.”

More on that to come… for now, check out the latest stories below. And happy Tuesday!
