Good afternoon, Redwood City!
County settles big
A major lawsuit has been settled between San Mateo County and a Woodside resident—at the not-so-small cost of $750,000. According to the lawsuit, the Sheriff's Department mistook then-52-year-old Odette Riegman's signs of a medical emergency as drug or alcohol impairment, leading to her wrongful arrest.
On Dec. 16, 2019, after nearly losing consciousness and crashing her car into a post, Riegman was arrested and taken to the county jail, according to the suit. She stayed there for roughly 9 hours before being released and transported to a hospital where she stayed for more than a week.
The settlement, which assigns no blame to the county or its deputies, is compensation for "noneconomic losses," including emotional distress and pain and suffering.
