Good afternoon, Redwood City!
New year, new faces
Last night’s city council meeting was both eventful and—compared with what’s been happening in neighboring San Mateo—not. I joined upwards of 70 people in a packed council chambers for what was, as Mayor Giselle Hale predicted, a “peaceful transition of power.”
Two new faces (and one returning) were sworn into the council, while Hale and Vice Mayor Diana Reddy, stepped down from the dais. Per the city’s rotation, and with unanimous support from the council, Jeff Gee and Lissette Espinoza-Garnica assumed office as mayor and vice mayor (despite grumbling from a few members of the public).
Hale said the city was “absolutely” in good hands with its new leadership. Before the meeting, she predicted a unanimous vote in favor of Gee and Espinoza-Garnica: “You couldn’t have two more people stepping into those roles,” she said, laughing. “In Redwood City we embrace differences.”
With three council members under the age of 30 and the Bay Area’s first non-binary vice mayor, Redwood City is entering a new phase. We’ll be watching to see what it brings.
