In partnership with various local law enforcement agencies and community organizations, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office is hosting an anonymous Gun Buyback on Saturday.
The event will occur at the North County Courthouse Parking Lot, located at 1050 Mission Road in South San Francisco, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The collaborative effort seeks to reduce the number of guns in circulation, ultimately contributing to safer communities. Participants will have the opportunity to surrender unwanted firearms securely and confidentially.
Participants must transport unloaded firearms in their vehicle trunks. The event will accept all types of guns without question and will offer cash rewards ranging from $50 to $200, depending on the type of firearm. In addition to collecting firearms, the event will educate the public on responsible firearm storage, and gun safety protocols and provide free gun locks.
- $50 cash for non-functioning firearms
- $100 cash for handguns, shotguns, or rifles
- $200 cash for assault weapons as classified in the State of California
San Mateo County has held six such events, collecting 2,359 firearms.
The San Mateo County Gun Buy-Back Program plans to host two events annually through 2023, with funding supplied by a partnership between the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, the Sheriff’s Office, and the local community group Citizens for a San Mateo County Gun Buy Back.
