August 16, 1933 – April 25, 2023
Evelyn M Chang passed away peacefully on April 25, 2023 after a short illness Born near Shanghai, China on Aug 16, 1933, the second of five children of the late Mr. and Mrs. Z. Z. Tan, she came of age during tumultuous times as the Second World War engulfed her country. Her family – mother and father, brother Alfred, and sisters Frances and Elsie all made their way to Taiwan via Chongqing and Hong Kong, making the nearly two-thousand-miles journey on foot, boat, and train. She is survived by her husband of over 60 years, T. F. as well as two children and four grandchildren.
Evelyn started work in the then nascent commercial aviation industry in Taiwan and stayed for her entire career. Beginning with Civil Air Transport, Evelyn later worked at Trans World Airways (TWA) in Taiwan, followed by the Airline Pilots' Association (ALPA) and United Pilots Office, both based out of SFO. Evelyn loved to travel, and took her children on international trips when they were young. Later in life she would travel with lifelong friends to destinations in Europe and North America, on river cruises and guided tours.
In possession of a serious sweet tooth, Evelyn loved to enjoy a slice of cake with a cup of tea, passed in the company of good friends and good conversation. She also delighted in treating others to a good meal or treats, and her colleagues recall her bringing in many Chinese dim sums to share in the office. In her retirement years, Evelyn pursued her dream of writing down various stories from her life, and left a rich collection of vignettes of her life.
