Good Morning, Redwood City.
Today is National Gun Violence Awareness Day. With guns now the leading cause of death among children and teens in the United States, San Mateo County residents are encouraged to “honor those whose lives are cut short and the countless survivors who are injured by shootings every day,” according to a proclamation introduced by Supervisor Dave Pine, president of the Board of Supervisors, and Supervisor Noelia Corzo.
National Gun Violence Awareness Day takes on added significance in San Mateo County this year. On Jan. 23, 2023, seven people were killed in a mass shooting at farms in Half Moon Bay, one of 236 mass shootings in the United States in 2023.
Some of the families displaced by January's tragic shooting will receive help from a new $16 million state grant to support farmworker home ownership. $5 million of that grant will aid San Mateo County farmworkers in Half Moon Bay.
The San Mateo County Department of Housing is slated to purchase 28 manufactured housing units. Approximately 18 of the 28 proposed manufactured housing units will be prioritized for those households displaced from the tragic events of the Half Moon Bay farm shooting in January. The other 10 will be available to agricultural workers earning up to 80 percent of the area median income, with a focus on extremely low-income households and those displaced due to uninhabitable living conditions.
People are encouraged to wear orange this weekend to honor survivors of gun violence.
