Good morning, Redwood City.

A Redwood City Planning Commission hearing is scheduled for tomorrow at 6 p.m. One notable topic on the agenda is a proposed resolution to approve exterior modifications to a building that was identified as one of forty properties that are "historic resource[s] to be preserved" in the city's Downtown Precise Plan.

Roy's Drive-In Cleaners at 1100 El Camino is the building in question. This proposed project would change of use from a dry cleaning business to a restaurant. The existing building is currently one story (about 15 feet high) and the proposal will add a story; doubling the height of the building.

The proposed project appears to meet the majority of the Redwood City Downtown Precise Plan Standards and Guidelines, according to a compatibility evaluation performed by an architect specializing in historic preservation. "The new work is visually identifiable as new," according to the evaluation. However, "The proposed project retains and preserves a reasonable amount of historic material." The existing sign would remain but be repainted.
