Good morning, Redwood City!
Sheriff's Oversight progress…
Local advocates, such as Fixin' San Mateo County (FxSMC) are connecting with others across the state to share insights and ideas. There's even a coalition formed – the "California Coalition for Sheriff's Oversight." They've got counties like Alameda, Marin, and Monterey all on board, all keen on improving oversight. Last November, a milestone was achieved when the County Board of Supervisors unanimously gave the nod for enhanced oversight. Following strong community support, they tasked an ad hoc committee to craft a proposal detailing the roles of an inspector general and an oversight board. A significant concern in San Mateo County: the alarming rate at which people of color are stopped or arrested by law enforcement. Supporters argue that with the backing of an Inspector General and a robust civilian oversight board can actively identify and suggest remedies to this pressing issue. Read that story here.
