Good morning, Redwood City!
Did you get the earthquake notification this morning? People as far away as San Jose reported getting it. A 4.1-magnitude earthquake was reported in east Contra Costa County at around 9:30 a.m., about 3 miles from Isleton and about 8 miles from Bethel Island, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It's my first ever time getting an earthquake notification like that, and I've never been through an earthquake (knock on wood). I'm from Texas, where we have different kinds of natural disasters.
Today's notification is good practice for tomorrow's Great ShakeOut, the USGS's special day of earthquake preparedness. It's scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 19, at precisely 10:19 a.m. local time. Open to all—families, schools, businesses—this drill teaches safety moves like "Drop, Cover, and Hold On." It's flexible, too; organizers can schedule alternative times or days. More info can be found here.
